I’m Karmin, the owner of Alabaster Trader. I source old and unique pieces of furniture and homewares in India and work with local craftspeople to have them refinished in an alabaster palette of whites and neutrals.
Old pieces from Northern India are transformed with whitewash, paint, bleach, acid, sand, wax and more, to create special pieces that make a statement in your home. I source on my own, so that I can immerse myself in choosing pieces that speak to me.
Then I spend a week with the local workers to transform them with new finishes. The refinishing process takes an additional 3-4 weeks to complete. So everything has the Alabaster touch, right down to the smallest candle holder. This means that when you purchase a piece from us, you’re investing in something unique. I like to source one-off, old pieces with history. Original pieces like Damchiyas (dowry chests and village cabinets) are becoming hard to find and are fast becoming pieces to treasure for years to come.
Our pieces can be used to create a statement in a range of home styles, from coastal to industrial and the natural home. I recommend selecting one special piece for a room or clustering a selection of our rustic homewares like candle holders and boards. Damchiyas, freestanding mirrors and consoles are a great way to create a space that has interest and soul.
I live in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast in Australia with my husband Rob and our two little boys. After a 15-year career in the technology industry, I’ve found my flow in life and love being creative and helping people find special pieces that they love.
