If we asked you to name a more iconic model and actress than Marilyn Monroe do you think you could?
Her signature blonde bob, red lips and and ultimate sex appeal appeared before many a camera and her outgoing persona became a selling point for the young talent. However the life of Norma Jeane leading up to and throughout her career are quite the story, growing up in foster care and an orphanage and marrying at the age of 16 before reaching stardom and all that comes with it, including drug and alcohol addiction and mental instability.
Now the story of Norma Jeane (Marilyn Monroe) will be told through a soon to be released Netflix biopic written and directed by Andrew Dominik and staring Ana de Armas as Norma.
Blonde is an adaptation of Oates' 2000 novel which takes a fictionalised look at Monroe's inner life. The film has been in development since 2011 with the original cast set to see Naomi Watts as the lead, with Jessica Chastein taking the role after, before then giving up the role to be taken over by the Cuban actress Ana De Armas.
"I cried. It was a big, big deal for me. It was a very important role for me, a big challenge, something that I was preparing for a very long time — and to finally sit in the chair and put the wig and makeup on… it was very special. I completely transformed. One of the most beautiful things about my job, I think, is to see yourself become someone else."
With production now finished and the Netflix release date scheduled for some time this year, director Dominik previsouly told Collider that he believes Blonde “will be one of the 10 best movies ever made.”
Saying “it’s a film about the human condition. It tells the story of how a childhood trauma shapes an adult who’s split between a public and a private self. It’s basically the story of every human being, but it’s using a certain sense of association that we have with something very familiar, just through media exposure. It takes all of those things and turns the meanings of them inside out, according to how she feels, which is basically how we live. It’s how we all operate in the world. It just seems to me to be very resonant. I think the project has got a lot of really exciting possibilities, in terms of what can be done, cinematically.”
