Visual storytelling with Alicia Sharples

As a visual storyteller Alicia uses illustrations to express the transience of life and death. In this artwork Autumn, augmented reality is used to show a tree losing its leaves, it represents the seasons of life.

The imminent march towards our death represented as leaves slowly fade and fall off the tree, a fleeting moment in nature capturing the changing nature of life.


Hi Alicia, welcome to the Woman Of Series! Can you tell us what it is you create?
I am a visual storyteller through illustrations. I create hand drawn films that touch on some delicate subjects.


Talk us through your creative process. How do you reach your signature style?
Using a base of watercolour I use a lot of colour and abstracted charcoal and pastel in slow moving hand drawn animations to tell stories that evoke emotions and bring emotional stories to life.


What is your big hope and dream for your work?
To touch people with deep stories by evoking emotion and giving the audience an opportunity to connect to a deep part of themselves, whilst witnessing someone else’s story creating a sense of universality.
