Olivia Steel is a self-taught artist and emerging designer living on Australia's beautiful Coffs Coast. Whilst Olivia's work is forever evolving, she has always had a love for creating minimal, abstract art and over the years has developed a unique style.

Finding it much more interesting to focus on form and composition, rather than any realistic representation, Olivia's work is inspired by Australian flora and the interior design world.

Olivia takes her love for the simple beauty within the natural world and creates abstracted depictions of botanicals.

Q1: Hi Olivia, welcome to the Woman Of Series! Can you tell us what it is you create?
Hi! Thanks so much for having me. I’m a visual artist creating abstract, botanical inspired artwork.

Q2: Can you share with us a bit about your journey so far and where it all began?
I began painting when I was in Year 10 at school… which is about 4 years ago now. From the very beginning I sold a few pieces every now and then, and I’m extremely grateful for that. However I only started taking it seriously as somewhat of a business since finishing school - just under 2 years now.

Q3: What do you think it is that makes your work unique?
My work is forever evolving but I have always had a love for creating minimal, abstract art and over time I’ve developed a unique style. I find it much more interesting to focus on form and composition, rather than any realistic representation.

Q4: What has been the single most crucial tool or strategy you’ve used to grow your creative business?
I’d definitely say social media, Instagram in particular. It often gets a bad wrap but when it comes down to it, I definitely owe any successes to the platform. I also really love connecting with like-minded, inspiring creatives everyday!

Q5: What’s been the most challenging lesson learnt so far in your career?
Not everyone will like what you do. And more importantly… that’s ok!

Q6: What’s been the best thing that’s happened to you since you started your career?
A sense of purpose. Finding this passion has made me more comfortable in who I am and who I want to be.

Q7: Where do you go or what do you do to recharge your creativity?
I love sitting in my studio and flicking through art and interior magazines/books with a cup of tea. I also find myself going to local cafes for a few hours to sketch ideas and write down any wild dreams I may have. I have a long list of things I want to create and sell, which always gets me excited and inspired.

Q8: How are you fulfilling your creative passions this year?
Allowing time in the studio to be experimental and find new directions to express myself creatively.

This year I’ve also started to branch out into the world of Interior Design/Decoration, something I’m also very passionate about.

Q9: We’re all about women inspiring women. Who inspires you?
My mum. She is the strongest woman I know. Also, strong female creatives like Sarah Ellison, Kelly Wearstler.

Q10: What advice would you impart on the next generation of women, and women in business?
Trust yourself. Start somewhere. Be patient. Take the time to know yourself and what you want to show the world.
