Continuous strokes, hidden marks, intuitive movement and the treatment of blue offers an intrigue of direct expression. Sea Foam is influenced by my curious interpretation.
Referencing the familiarity and showcasing the chaotic unknown elements of the sea, Sea Foam allures the viewer to reflect deeply within the layered gestural strokes emulating the vastness of the ocean.
Hi Evelyn, welcome to the Woman Of Series! Can you tell us what it is you create?
I paint mixed media abstract works with acrylic, pastel, spray paint, marker and pencil. Pretty much all the things. Lately, I have been creating blue ink works and up-cycling old vases to give them another life. I’m guided by intuition and the wondrous ever-present magic of the ocean.
Talk us through your creative process. How do you reach your signature style?
Long before I pick up a paintbrush, I like to clear my head in a natural place. I keep moleskins full of notes I have written at the beach, including poems and observations. I will often read through these journals and pick out words, or sayings that resonate with me. With this, I set a handful of intentions for each piece. I find this helps silence the internal noise as I begin to flow and create with intent.
My signature style evolved as a direct expression of my longing to be closer to the ocean. Bright blues, sky blues, royal blues, ocean blues. Rash strokes of colour on canvas. I started using solely acrylic as my medium, but I was soon intrigued by layering different mediums to accentuate my emotions. I have found since I have moved closer to the ocean, my freedom of strokes have become bigger and bolder.
What is your big hope and dream for your work?
I hope to continue to create art as a means of expression and healing for myself whilst also making art that resonates with others.
I dream of creating art full-time and making my passion a career.
What are your top 3 superpowers?
Determination, adaptability, and always leaving the studio with blue feet.
We’re all about women inspiring women. Who inspires you?
My mother, Mary. She is a strong, beautiful, caring and understanding woman. She worked hard to make sure that my sister and I had a childhood much different from her own. I am living a life of truths and chasing my dream because of her.
What advice would you impart on the next generation of women?
Create the life you’ve dreamt of and manifest your truth. Breathe and be kind to yourself, always. Enjoy the positivity, celebrate your small wins, relish in the words and encouragement of others. It’s all for you.
