This is something we get asked a lot, especially from people who have oily or breakout-prone skin. Many people worry it may lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Which is understandable, given we have grown up learning oil causes pimples and congestion.
But in actual fact, oils are a natural way to deliver nutrients and fatty acids to your skin.
And while not all face oils are created equal, a high-quality, non-pore-clogging face oil will actually help to balance your skins natural oil production. It sounds counter-intuitive but by feeding your skin oil, it doesn’t need to produce so much itself.
Which is definitely a good thing! It's like giving your skin a big super smoothie with everything it needs to be healthy.
The benefits of face oils
Our skin naturally produces sebum (oil) to keep our skin moisturised and protected. Different plant oils, like Argan, Jojoba, Rosehip or Safflower (to name a few) are similar to those already produced by the skin.
This means when used in your skincare, your skin easily recognises them and knows exactly what to do with them!
Face Oils:
How to choose the right oil
When it comes to the face, not all oils are created equal. It's super important to choose the right oil to use on your face - one that isn’t going to lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
Have you ever heard of 'comedogenic'? It literally means 'tending to clog pores'. What we don't want is a comedogenic oil (like palm oil) on our face that is going to cause breakouts.
Instead, we want to opt for a non-comedogenic oil (like Argan Oil) that will hydrate and benefit the skin with no risk of clogged pores.
This is how oils are rated on the comedogenic scale:
0 - Will Not Clog Pores
1 - Low
2 - Moderately Low
3 - Moderate
4 - Fairly High
5 - Highly Likely To Clog Pores
One of our hero oils we use in range of our products (like our Renew Serum) is, you guessed it, Argan Oil. It has a 0 rating on the comedogenic scale - so it will never clog your pores!
